How to pdf metadata viewer & remover

  1. Select your PDF. Choose or drag in the file to display common Info fields in your browser.
  2. Review. Review the displayed fields. Loading can update software fields and dates, so this is not an exact audit of the original.
  3. Strip (optional). Tick the box to download a copy with six selected Info fields cleared, while page content stays untouched.

Why check and strip PDF metadata?

A PDF can carry a hidden information block that does not appear on the page but travels with the file. Common fields include title, author, subject, keywords, creator and producer software, plus dates or other data depending on how the file was made. Word processors and PDF exporters often fill some of this in automatically, which makes it easy to send without noticing.

Usually that is harmless. It stops being harmless the moment the file is going somewhere you would rather stay neutral or anonymous. An author field can quietly attach your real name to a document you submitted under a pen name; a producer string can reveal the software used to create it; dates or other embedded data can add context. In job applications, blind peer reviews, legal filings, whistleblowing and anything headed for publication, those details can matter alongside the content itself.

This tool does two jobs. First it reads the metadata straight from the file and shows it to you, so you can see exactly what you are about to hand over. Then, if you choose, it writes out a fresh copy with six selected Info fields cleared, while leaving every page, its text, images and layout untouched. Other metadata, attachments and embedded content may remain, so the output should be reviewed before sensitive sharing.

A fair caveat: this clears only Title, Author, Subject, Keywords, Creator and Producer. It does not clear dates, XMP or custom metadata, attachments, visible identifiers, or hidden content. It is not an anonymity or forensic-sanitization guarantee. Reading and stripping both happen in your browser, so the document is never uploaded.

Frequently asked questions

Are my files uploaded?

No. The metadata is read and stripped entirely in your browser.

What is PDF metadata?

Information stored inside the file but not visible on its pages: title, author, subject, keywords, the software that created it (creator/producer), and sometimes dates or other embedded data. Word processors and PDF editors often fill it in automatically.

Why strip metadata?

Before sharing externally. Metadata can reveal names, software details or other context you may not want in a job application, an anonymous review, a legal filing, or a document headed for publication. This tool clears only six selected Info fields, not every possible data source.

Does stripping affect the document?

The selected six Info fields are cleared while page content is left untouched. The output is still a PDF that should be reviewed, because other metadata, attachments or embedded content may remain.

Does stripping remove everything trackable?

It clears Title, Author, Subject, Keywords, Creator and Producer. It does not clear dates, XMP or custom metadata, attachments, visible identifiers, or hidden content. It is not an anonymity or forensic-sanitization guarantee, so review sensitive documents with a validated workflow.
