Why add page numbers to a PDF?

Page numbers are the quiet infrastructure of any serious document. The moment a file is printed, emailed around, or discussed on a call, someone needs to say "look at the third paragraph on page 7". Without numbers that instruction is useless. A dropped stack of paper can be put back in order; a reviewer can point precisely; a reader can tell at a glance how much is left. For contracts, reports, manuals and dissertations they aren't a nicety, they're expected, and their absence reads as carelessness.

Plenty of PDFs arrive without them, though: exported from slide decks, assembled from merged files, or scanned from loose sheets. Rather than reopening the original source (which you may not even have) and re-exporting, this tool stamps numbers straight onto the finished PDF. You choose from six placements (top or bottom, and left, center or right) so the numbers land where the layout has room and don't collide with existing headers or footers.

The format bends to the document. A plain 1, 2, 3 suits most work; a "1 / 10" count reassures readers of a long report how far they have to go and makes a missing page obvious; a "Page 1" style reads well on formal letters and submissions. Setting the starting number matters more than it sounds: begin at a number other than one when a cover page or table of contents shouldn't be counted, or when this file is really one section of a larger bound document.

None of this disturbs your original text, images or layout; the numbers are simply drawn on top. And because the whole operation happens on your own device, a confidential report gets its numbering without ever being handed to an outside server.

Frequently asked questions

Are my files uploaded?

No. Page numbers are drawn in your browser; the file never leaves your device.

Can I start numbering from a specific page?

You can set the starting number (for example, begin at 1 or 5). Every page then gets a number, counting up from there.

What number formats are available?

Plain numbers (1, 2, 3), 'current / total' (1 / 10), or 'Page 1' style.

Where are the numbers placed?

You can choose any of six positions: bottom or top, and left, center or right.
