How to rotate a PDF
Last updated: September 5, 2026
Sideways scans and upside-down pages are one of the most common PDF annoyances. Here's how to fix them permanently, so the rotation is saved into the file itself, not just your current view.
Use our free Rotate PDF tool. It runs in your browser.
Turning pages the right way up
- Open the Rotate PDF tool.
- Select or drag in the PDF you need to straighten.
- Pick the angle: 90°, 180°, or 270° (measured clockwise).
- Choose whether to rotate every page or just a selection, such as
1-3, 5. - Press Rotate PDF and download the corrected file.
What each angle actually does
Rotation is always a multiple of 90° because that is the only rotation a PDF stores natively. Here is what to reach for:
| Angle | Effect | Fixes |
|---|---|---|
| 90° | Quarter turn clockwise | A page lying on its left edge (top points right) |
| 180° | Half turn, flips top and bottom | An upside-down scan |
| 270° | Quarter turn anticlockwise (three-quarters clockwise) | A page lying on its right edge (top points left) |
A viewer's rotate button is not the same thing
Nearly every PDF reader has a rotate control, but it only spins the page on your screen for the current session. Send that file to a colleague, reopen it tomorrow, or print it, and the page is sideways again because nothing was actually saved. This tool writes the rotation into the file itself, so the correction stays put wherever the document travels next.
The /Rotate value, in plain terms
Every page in a PDF carries a property called /Rotate, a number that must be 0, 90, 180, or 270 and tells any viewer how far to turn that page before drawing it. Fixing orientation is a matter of rewriting that single value, which is why rotation is lossless: the text, images, and vectors on the page are never touched or re-rendered, only the instruction about which way is up. This tool adds your chosen angle to each page's existing /Rotate setting rather than overwriting it, so applying 90° to a page that was already turned 90° leaves it at 180°. That stacking behaviour is handy for nudging a page that someone half-corrected earlier.
Why pages arrive sideways in the first place
The cause is almost always capture, not corruption. A sheet-feed scanner set to landscape stamps the same rotation on every page regardless of how the paper actually went in; a phone camera may auto-orient a photographed document the wrong way; a fax-to-PDF gateway can rotate everything a quarter turn. In each case the page content is perfectly intact; only the orientation metadata is off, which is exactly what a proper rotate corrects.
Handling a document that is only partly wrong
Reports frequently mix orientations: a run of portrait text with the occasional landscape table or wide chart dropped in sideways. Rather than spinning the whole file, switch to specific pages and list just the offenders, for instance 4, 7-8, leaving every other page untouched. If the document also needs structural surgery, pair rotation with deleting pages or extracting pages.
Rotation stays on your device
The rewrite of those /Rotate values happens in your browser, so the scan you are fixing (an ID, a signed form, a medical result) is never uploaded and no copy is left behind on a server. You feed the file in, the corrected version downloads, and nothing else sees it. For the wider reasoning on local processing, read are online PDF tools safe?
Rotation questions
Does rotating reduce quality? No. Only the page's rotation value changes, so the content is bit-for-bit the same and prints identically.
Can I rotate different pages by different amounts? Run the tool once per angle: rotate the pages needing 90° first, download, then reopen that file and rotate the pages needing 180°. Because rotations stack, each pass builds on the last.
Why is there no 45° option? A PDF page can only be stored at 0, 90, 180, or 270 degrees; arbitrary angles would require re-rendering the page as an image and are not part of the format.
Will the rotation hold up when I email or print the file? Yes. It is saved into the document, so every viewer and printer honours it, unlike a temporary on-screen rotate.
