Open PDF to Word

Getting an editable .docx from your PDF

  1. Open the PDF to Word tool.
  2. Select or drag in your PDF (up to 25 MB and 200 pages).
  3. Press Convert to Word. The tool reads the text and layout and rebuilds them as a .docx.
  4. Download the file and open it in Microsoft Word, Google Docs, LibreOffice or Pages to keep editing.

Why this is a reconstruction, not a copy

A PDF and a Word document describe a page in almost opposite ways. A PDF is a map of positions: "this letter sits here, that image sits there," with no built-in idea of paragraphs, headings or a table as a single object. Word, by contrast, describes the flowof a document: paragraphs that reflow, styles that cascade, tables that hold rows and cells. Converting from one to the other means the tool has to infer structure that the PDF never explicitly stored: guessing where a paragraph begins, whether two blocks are columns or one, and which lines form a table. It does this well most of the time, which is why the result is genuinely editable rather than a locked image, but it is inference, and that is worth setting expectations around.

  • Straightforward text documents (letters, articles, reports) convert cleanly and are ready to edit with little or no fuss.
  • Layout-heavy files (newsletters with multiple columns, precise financial tables, forms, brochures with graphics) usually come across close but need some manual tidying.
  • Scanned PDFs contain no digital text at all, only a picture of the page, so there is nothing for the converter to extract.

Is your PDF real text or a scan? A ten-second test

This one check saves a lot of confusion. Open the PDF and try to drag-select a single line of text with your cursor. If individual words highlight, the file contains real, extractable text and will convert into editable Word. If instead the whole page selects as one solid block, like selecting a photo, it is a scan, and conversion will give you an image with no editable words. In that case, run it through our OCR guide first to add a text layer, then convert the searchable result.

Why your layout might not come through perfectly

When cleanup is needed, it is almost always because the PDF packed visual detail the Word format has to approximate: text drawn inside boxes that Word turns into ordinary paragraphs, columns it reads in the wrong order, or fonts it swaps for near matches. The fix is quick (reset a few paragraph styles, nudge a table, re-check column order) and it is still far faster than retyping the document from scratch. Treat the output as a strong first draft you finish, not a flawless clone.

What happens to your PDF on our server

This tool uses a server implementation to rebuild a Word document, so your PDF is uploadedto our server to be processed. It travels over HTTPS, and LibreOffice uses temporary server files in a separate job directory. Cleanup is attempted when processing ends, but immediate or secure deletion cannot be guaranteed. Files are limited to 25 MB and 200 pages, and requests are rate-limited. That is the real bargain of any server-side converter: convenience and fidelity in exchange for an upload. If the document is highly confidential, our are online PDF tools safe guide can help you decide whether that trade is right for you.

Frequently asked

Which apps open the result? Any modern word processor: Microsoft Word, Google Docs, LibreOffice Writer and Apple Pages all read .docx.

Why doesn't my layout come through perfectly? Because the converter has to rebuild structure the PDF never stored explicitly. Text documents convert cleanly; multi-column, table-heavy and graphic-rich pages usually need light cleanup.

My converted file has no editable text. What went wrong? Your PDF was a scan. Add a text layer with OCR first, then convert.

Is there a limit? Yes: 25 MB and up to 200 pages per file. Split a longer document and convert it in parts.

Can I go the other way? Yes. When you have finished editing and want a fixed, shareable file again, see how to convert Word to PDF.
